Cathe's Corner

Hello Carolinas Security Professionals!

Can you believe that this year is almost over? 2011 is at its close and 2012 is peeking over its shoulder waiting for an introduction.

2011 has been a very successful year for the Carolinas. The Chapter received its 6th consecutive Chapter of Excellence Award! Brown Bag Virtual Lunch training continued to be a great venue for security training. Our membership grew to 140! Isn’t that phenomenal! Spread the word! Let’s keep them coming. Through numbers come experience, knowledge and subject matter experts.

The National Seminar was held in New Orleans and the Carolinas took the "Big Easy" by storm. A lot of new friendships were made, networking was abundant and skillsets were enhanced with the excellent training afforded.

The biggest development for 2011 is that South Carolina is in the process of starting a new Chapter. Sometime in late December or early January the South Carolina “Palmetto” Chapter hopes to be officially approved giving NCMS membership in the Carolinas two chapters of which to join.

The new Palmetto Chapter has been OFFICIALLY APPROVED by the National NCMS Board. for more information, view the new website for the Palmetto Chapter: http://www.ncms-palmetto.org/

Of course with this division comes a lot of work but it’s being handled by excellent hands at a great speed. Cheryl Wheeler, past Chair for the Carolinas will serve as the founding Chair of the newly formed Palmetto Chapter. Chris Hildebrand will serve as Vice Chair and Pam Owens will serve as Secretary/ Treasurer.

The Carolinas chapter will need to redesign its logo, rethink the chapter name and redo its bylaws but that’s definitely nothing we can’t handle when the time comes.

2012 will be my last year as Chapter Chair (according to the bylaws we can only serve two consecutive terms). Carol Jeffries will serve the chapter well as Vice Chair. Kathryn Hare brings her skillset to the Secretary position and Linda Stender will fill the Treasurer position.

2012 will be bringing the formation of ISP Study groups to allow the Carolinas crowd the ability to test prior to Nationals. We’ve one last training session for 2011 with the Brown Bag on Derivative Classification being provided on Wednesday, 14 December. Deadline to register is 7 December so don’t delay!

Finally I wanted to take the time to personally (and openly) thank the board of officers for 2011. Greg Bolick, Ralph Posey and Barbara Bentley helped me through a tremendously difficult year and served our chapter in superior fashion. Here’s wishing each of you a safe & happy holiday season!

4th Qtr Spotlight on Security - Greg Bolick - COMSEC Manager, CSSO, and Client Technical Secialist

This quarter’s Spotlight on Security Recipient is Greg Bolick, IBM Corp. located in Research Triangle Park, NC. Greg has been a member of NCMS since right after the chapter was formed and I honestly can't remember a time when Greg wasn't involved. His common sense approach to training coupled with his broad knowledge base has been beneficial in putting the Carolinas Chapter where it is today. Greg is well thought of in the chapter as was evidenced when I was overwhelmed with responses from Chapter Members suggesting Greg as the "Spotlight on Security". Whenever needed he's been there and I'm sure that won't change much even as he steps down from his Vice-Chair position this December.

Members: Login to read Greg Bolick's complete profile.

NCMS Carolinas Chapter VACATION Raffle

The NCMS Carolinas Chapter was formed to provide training and technical support to industrial security professionals in the North and South Carolina. Since its inception, the chapter’s leadership has made a concerted effort to make the membership aware of philanthropic opportunities that support our “freedom fighters” and their associated communities. This year we will help the United Service Organizations of North and South Carolina.

To accomplish this we held a raffle which was drawn on November 18, 2011. Tickets sold for $10 each or 3 tickets for $25.

Our final total was $4,330.00 !! Thanks to all of those who supported us!

All the prizes have been donated as has the printing, so every dollar collected was donated to:

the USO-NC presented at the USO Center of the Raleigh Durham Airport in North Carolina
by Chritstine Peterson and Linda Stender to Connie Inggs, and Patricia DeZetter

Did you know that you could serve on one of the National NCMS Boards?

Not only does it give you greater insight into NCMS but it puts you on the forefront of security information and policy making. It takes less time than you’d think!

Below is the listing of the committees you can join and the chairperson of the committee.

If you’re interested in their committee simply drop them an email asking to “join their committee” and cc me on it. Wouldn’t it be great to have at least one Carolinas member on each National Committee? We’d get all the good information first!
